Part 1: The Importance of Listening – Outline

  • 45% of our time is spent listening
  • Tests show that after 10 minutes only 50% of what was heard is retained
  • Overall, people understand and retain only 25% of what they hear.
  • The reason is that people were never trained to listen
  • People are often occupied with thinking how to respond that they do not give full attention to listening
  • Listening is the catalyst for mutual understanding

(Lawson, 2007).

Part 11: How does my learning style relate to my note taking strategy?

My learning style tends to be a combination of all three, visual, auditory and kinesthetic. They are used to my advantage from time to time. Visual is dominant. This being so a broad outline is the way information can be processed for easy retaining. More importantly, if while reading, it is realized that the author did not make full use of clear headlines, it would be very difficult for me to interpret information or take notes. As soon as a chunk of words come together without defining portions, it turns me off because immediately a blockage appears regarding where to begin taking notes because my understanding becomes obscure.

Therefore, seeing words on a slide, or pictures without even words motivates me take notes. Listening to words without accompany pictures is my disaster. After two minutes the tendency is to fall asleep. There is where the note taking ends. This confirms my dominant visual learning style. As it combines with note taking drawing by carving out patterns is another strategy applied when taking notes. It helps me to retain the vision based on my interpretation of the idea, which forms a lasting impression. Studies have revealed that when visual learners use graphic organizers their critical thinking is enhanced (Pashler et.al, 2009).
