Research Paper

The Industrial Revolution is signified by many changes in the standards of human living. During the Industrial Revolution three major factors of living conditions were improved. These improvements were manifested in, increasing methods of transportation, harnessing electricity, and refining manufacturing and industrial processes. Furthermore, the Industrial Revolution had a major effect on the social and political aspects of day to day life. However, a less known effect of the Industrial Revolution is seen in its influence on the Arts. One effect the Industrial Revolution had on music was seen in the improvements of musical instrument construction. The refined manufacturing processes of the Industrial Revolution allowed for mass productions of instruments, therefore reducing the cost, allowing for cheaper instruments that could be distributed to more individuals and not just the privileged. During this revolution, technological advancements like the addition of valves to brass instruments allowed composer to write and play pieces that had more depth. The creation of rod and key mechanisms allowed more efficiency and precision in the holes of woodwind instruments. The Industrial Revolution contributed directly to improvements in the sounds and quality of music production. The Industrial Revolution also affected paintings in an unexpected manner. First, it was this revolution that defined four new styles of painting. Artist began to categorize their preference of painting styles based on the way they viewed the world during the Industrial Revolution. Neo-classicists focused on creating artwork that reflected Roman and Greek influence. Romantics created artwork that reflected visionary and dreamlike natures. Realist painted scenes from everyday life, just the way that they appeared. Lastly, Pre-Raphaelites focused their energies on creating religious art using Medieval and Renaissance influences.

The Industrial Revolution also had negative effects on the Arts. In many ways, the revolution allowed so many people to create music and art that it only created overcrowded markets full of terrible and mediocre works. With so many people painting and composing, many exceptional works became lost or overlooked.
