Influence of nursing research on current nursing and health care practices

An evaluation of the influence of nursing research on current nursing and health care practices reveal that with the emergence of evidence based practice in twenty-first centry health care delivery science research has become the foundation for deriving evidence applicable to  current nursing practice (Cherry & Jacob, 2014).

Relevant research

For example, there is proof of how evidence initiated research influences current evolutions within the science as it pertains to practice modifications. A study conducted by Bruce S. Zitkus (2012) pertaining to ‘Type 2 diabetes mellitus: An evidence-based update’ revealed that the new evidence based guidelines for treating type 2 diabetes ought to be modified since more people are contacting the disease and developing complications  more quickly than before. Hence, there is evidence to prove that the interventions currently applied are ineffective in treating/controlling the disease. Changes advocated include utilizing a team of specialists as practitioners for treating pateints who already are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (Zitkus, 2012).

Quality of the research study

The level of evidence in this research study can be rated at level V being expert opinion on the topic. No randomized control trials were conducted to supportive of a level 1 evidence profile. As such, it can be argued that while the article research produces evidence based on the criteria it is weak.

Use the research findings to improve your nursing practice

These findings can be used to improve my nursing practice. The knowledge produced from this research revealed that present approaches of treating diabetes mellitus are ineffective. Therefore , diabetic education programes may have to be re-evaluated while more research conducted to offering level 1 evidence alternative interventions.
