Essay

Institutional Review Board

If I were submitting a proposal to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Capella University, I would include an informed consent procedures that explains precisely to each participating family what they will need to do if they agree to participate in the family. Furthermore, this documentation will be both provided to them and explained to them in words that a third grader would be understand, in order to ensure that all participants understand the terms provided. Finally, they will be informed that they are not required to participate in the study and are able to withdraw at any time for any reason.

The IRB will be notified that all families will remain anonymous throughout the process, and be simply referred to as family 1, family 2, etc. Each individual within each family will also be assigned a false name for reference in the research discussion. In this manner, the participating families will never be able to be identified based on the information revealed. While the study is being conducted, the family’s contact information will be password protected.

Each family will be able to gain access to the findings at the same time as the general public in order to prevent bias in the study results. They will receive word after publication whether or not they should continue with the intervention strategy utilized during the trial period. Remedial services will be provided if such services appear to be necessary. However, it does not appear that there will be any negative consequences of participating in the study. The family’s situation is expected to remain either the same or improve.
