In both Japan and Germany, the police forces were reorganized by victorious countries following a war. In each case the resulting policing structure varied from what the conquered country had prior to the war. When one country comes to have control over another give at least 4 factors that should be considered when the conquering country goes about establishing internal security in the conquered country?
Firstly, the conquered country’s security situation should be put into consideration. Without information about the prevailing security status, entry in a rather violent country will pose greater challenge for the enactment of the internal security structures. Although the presence of chaos offers a chance for the conquering country to make a forceful entry in the pretext of maintaining peace, it is important for them to establish the root cause of the conflict in order for their mission to be successful. Secondly, the conquered country’s political system is vital for the conquering country; especially if the two countries have varying structures. For instance, one-party states are usually common with conquered countries as the conquering country claims to be pushing foe democracy. As such, the prevailing leaders would expect opposition and the conquering country should identify strategies of accessing the country’s governance (Nadelmann, 1993).
Thirdly, the historical background of the conquered nation is vital for understanding whether there have been previous invasions. A country that has never had invasions from conquerors will present less opposition to invaders, and vice versa. Lastly, religion affects the success or failure of the conquering mission. Religious disagreements often common with Christians and Islam have been reason for recent cases of invasions. For instance, the US president George Bush adopted the concept “War on Terror” while seeking public support for his attack on the Middle East (Holland, 2009).
How would this be applied in Iraq and Afghanistan?
The invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan was precipitated due to cold relationship that they had with the United States. Although the public had been convinced that Islam are solely responsible for terrorism attacks, scholars have established that Bush and his administration wanted to remain super powers by attacking the Middle East oil sources. The political situation of the Iraq and Afghanistan was unstable prior to the entry of the US, hence the process of conquering has never ended to this date. Religiously, Islam have fought against the Christians claiming it is a “Holy war” against hypocrites; allowing for the US to brand Islam as terrorists. Lastly, the history of the Middle East countries has presented conflict against each other for a considerable of period of time (Haslam, 2006).
