The Link Between Economic Ideals and Our Attitudes, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 326

Essay

The link between economic ideals as a capitalist society and our attitudes towards the environment is related to the notion that pure capitalism is an economic system that is based on private ownership of the means of production for customers for pure monetary gain – whether that production involves animals and animal agriculture, farming, and land sustenance. It can also be said that the nature of class division, which is a result of a capitalistic society, is contributory towards the perceived negative farming practices that are in abundance today.

Education and awareness towards the multiple levels of our society is the key to changing the way that people view food, agriculture and production. The educational message can start in our schools with increasing levels of age-appropriate alertness to ensure the younger generation is made mindful of the current situation regarding our farming practices. Promoting agricultural studies in our colleges and universities that combines the best in traditional husbandry and animal welfare science is another avenue to drive the educational awareness message. Organizations that strongly believe in humane farming and agricultural practices can advocate for acute reductions in the consumption of factory-farmed meat, fish, eggs, and dairy by encouraging conscientious consumer decision-making to the mainstream consumer population. Raising awareness can also be gained by producing stories, essays, books, and films that depict the problems in animal agriculture and the deeper cultural issues behind them. There is a non-profit organization called Farm Forward (http://www.farmforward.com) whose mission is to “implement innovative strategies to promote conscientious food choices, reduce farm animal suffering, and advance sustainable agriculture.” Farm forward advocate traditional husbandry with current animal welfare science and strive to eliminate the worst  practices in factory farming. The board of Farm Forward is made up of leading eminent academic and business individuals with years of experience in farming and animal husbandry. Farm Forward relies on monetary donations from the public to sustain and support their practices towards more humane agriculture and farming practices.
