Essay

The nursing field allows me to serve my calling, by extending myself to do the right thing, and be compassionate, and caring in that calling. As a spiritual leader in the nursing field working for Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare, in the mental health branch, can be challenging, but also rewarding. The element of nursing is to help the injured and the ill. As a servant leader, the aspects of accountability is essential. As a call to the nursing field, it is the call to bring hope to crisis events through openness to and respect for the gift and spirit in others, empathy, careful listening, and compassion. With these gifts, I have a dedication to be a spiritual leader, that is able to bring about the best in followers, and other leaders in the organization.

Working with mental health patients can be trying at times, and it is fundamental that my faith in God guide me through these challenges. As I look to the scripture of 1 Timothy 4:12-13, “And don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young. Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity. Stay at your post reading Scripture, giving counsel, teaching.” (Peterson, 2002) With this continued message in my growing faith, and position as a spiritual and nursing leader, I am able to manage the skills of my profession, as well as my faith are beneficial in solidifying my ethics value. The ethics and values of nursing includes the emphasis on collaborative care, human dignity, and patient relationships. As well as the ethics of respect for autonomy, non-maleficence, and beneficence. In managing my ethics, values, my faith, personal attributes and skills, I am able to grow in my commitment as a nurse leader. Coming from my own challenging experiences in which I had to escape the Civil War in Sierra Leone, my faith in God has brought me to where I am able to be a blessing and a leader to others. My actions will be used to judge me on Judgment Day, so I choose to walk in the light, in my words and my actions on and off my job.
