Words: 407

Essay

The mission statement of my agency is “To provide community based residential services, ongoing support and employment opportunities to promote growth and safety for consumers of mental health services. We strive to maximize independence, employment and quality of life so that each person can be integrated into the community where he or she lives, learns and works in the environment of his or her choice”.

From my observations and experiences so far, the mission statement reflects exactly what is done at this agency. The slogan at the agency states that they often use clean, safe and well-supervised environment. The users of most of these services are given the opportunity or encouragement to access the community. This however promotes independence in life. On every Friday in their weekly calendar, they are allowed to access community resources whereby they are allowed to go out on their own to the bank, have some hair cut, go shopping or anything that involves accessing the community resources. They also use the following ways to access the community in order to facilitate their integration into the community: visiting different culturally diversified public libraries, malls, parks and museums.  They also encourage service user to make good use of their supported employment program. With this program, most of the members are now working and earning so as to make their ends meet. Most of them now work as plumbers, janitor and maintenance, all working to keep improving the shape of buildings. All this activities helps to keep them busy, active and health and therefore minimizes the chances for hospitalization. They also have day time program that support and promote growth and safety. Some of these programs include IMR, Independence living skills and smoking cessation groups. All of these support the mission statement of the agency.

Overall, the predominant values that guides the work of the staff at the agency entails optimism that everyone has the aptitude to learn recover and grow. Every service user is treated as an individual since they all have unique way to recover. Every person, regardless of his or her illness is also treated with dignity and respect. Also in this agency, the service users and staff members are culturally diversify. They respect each other’s culture and believe that they work to for the benefit of all. All these are some of the psychiatric rehabilitation values that they work with consistently to achieve the goal that might be required by the service users.
