Research Paper

Ameloblastomas or adamantinoma refer to benign, insistent tumors that normally arise from the mandibles or the maxilla. The Multicystic Solid Ameloblastoma is among the most common odontogentic tumors that get clinical attentions. This type of tumor is often aggressive and can have very significant impacts on the patient’s mortality and morbidity. Occurrences of Ameloblastomas are normally preceded by the presence of unerupted tooth ((Suk and Yeon 198).

Many professionals have attributed the etiology of the Multicystic Solid Ameloblastoma to a number of things. Some of these include gum and tooth infections, injuries to the jaws or mouth and inflammations that may occur in these areas. Others state attribute it to viral infections as well as deficiency of certain minerals and proteins in the diet of the person are main causes (Hande et al 1637). These are just among the projected causes of these tumors and cysts and many medical professionals do not understand why they get so malignant.

Some of the symptoms that appear at the onset of Multicystic Solid Ameloblastoma include loose teeth, painless swellings, ulcers, pain if swelling occur on other structures and a periodontal gum disease. The lesions normally occur on the maxilla and the mandibles. While in the maxilla, the Ameloblastomas may extend to the maxillary sinus and eventually the floor of the nose, the eye sockets and even the skull. Most medical professionals recommend early treatment upon diagnosis to stop any further growth of the tumors and possibility f cancer projections. Despite the fact that they occur less frequently, they are known to be malignant and can easily spread to other body parts such as the lungs. Consequently, it is advisable that the initial surgery be done in a more careful and accurate manner to prevent any recurrence of the same. It is worth noting that the Ameloblastomas are not malignant in nature, however, instances of recurrence after surgery turns them malignant.

One fact about Multicystic Solid Ameloblastoma is that it affects both male and females at equal proportions. This happens regardless of their ages, races, or even sex. Its universal nature demands that all people must stay vigilant to prevent the occurrence and spread of this rare infection (Suk and Yeon 193).

Various tests can be done to establish the presence of Ameloblastoma infection. Some of the ways for checking the presence of this infection include the use of imaging tests such as CT, X-ray to diagnose the extent of infection. Similarly, biopsy may be used in diagnosis of the infection. Radiography can also be used to establish the extent of the infections. The radiographs help in locating the exact position of the lesions hence making treatment easy. Here, a small portion of the tumor is removed and taken to lab for testing and analysis. Biopsy is mainly done to establish the type of cells that form the tumor and whether the cells are malignant or benign. These tests are very important in establishing the presence of infected cells and the best treatment plan to put in place for the patient (Hande et al 1640).

There are many ways of treating Multicystic Solid Ameloblastoma. The most common way is through surgery where the tumor is removed by surgical enelcleation and resection. The excision of the parts is done by surgery to completely remove the infected portion. Radiation and chemotherapy has also been seen as treatment means. Radiation therapy may be recommended in the following situations recurrence, incomplete removal of the Ameloblastoma and malignancy among others.

Prognosis of these treatments is normally certain with the use of surgery. Removing the infected cells completely renders the tumor unable to recur. In cases where there is recurrence, radiation is always recommended to completely finish the infected cells. At times, differential diagnosis for this infection can be confused with Osteosarcoma, thus the medical practitioners ought to be careful during the examination process.
