The New Range Rover, Essay Example

Essay

In the last few weeks I have been seeing one particular commercial for the new Range Rover almost every time I turn on the television. The soundtrack to the commercial is almost all drumming, like what I would think of as African-style drumming. I did a quick search and found out that the soundtrack was composed by Jun Miyake, a composer and trumpeter from Japan. Miyake incorporates elements from many different cultures in his music, and makes them sound like they work well together. It seems that the way that music from different cultures is coming together in new ways is mostly because of the Internet and other forms of communication that make it possible and easy for people from any part of the world to research or experience cultures from anywhere else. I recently read about the album “Graceland” by Paul Simon, which h combined American folk/rock music with music and singing from Africa. That was in the 1980s, and it was something that was new to the American public. Now it is much more common, as popular music contains elements of all different styles. Artists such as Shakira and Jennifer Lopez are just two examples of the many different popular artists who blend Latin American influences into their popular music, amd they are popular around the world. This trend of cultures coming together in music will likely continue to grow in years to come.

This is a good discussion about the Polynesian music you describe. I definitely did not know much about that music or the instruments they use, like the slit-drum. I also did not know how the influence of Europeans and missionaries was incorporated into Polynesian music. This is a good example of how the music of one culture can affect the music of another culture to bring out a new musical form. I’m not sure it really addresses the topic of the discussion all that closely, because it does not mention how this affects our own cultural experience, or is reflected in media, but it does offer a good perspective on the idea of different cultures integrating musical elements together.

Your response offers an interesting perspective. I was thinking about how some musical styles have blended together, and you took a different perspective by writing about how the music of different cultures can be heard in their original forms, but here in the United States. It is possible to visit different regions, or different types of businesses (such as the restaurants you mentioned) and hear music that is specific to certain cultures. And there are, of course, radio stations and television networks that broadcast primarily to Spanish-speaking audiences, which is becoming more and more common. So the music of different cultures can still be heard the way it originally sounds, and can also be heard in the way the music of different cultures blends together to form new sounds and styles.
