Components of NIDS/HIDS

NIDS/HIDS is defined as“Software that detects an attack on a network or computer system. A Network IDS (NIDS) is designed to support multiple hosts, whereas a Host IDS (HIDS) is set up to detect illegal actions within the host. Most IDS programs typically use signatures of known cracker attempts to signal an alert. Others look for deviations of the normal routine as indications of an attack. Intrusion detection is very tricky. Too much analysis can add excessive overhead and also trigger false alarms. Insufficient analysis can overlook a valid attack” (Ids.2011). A typical Cisco NIDS/HIDS is available in two categories i.e. network intrusion detection and host intrusion detection. Organizations are suggested to implement intrusion detection system that will provide enhanced security for the network. The reason for implementing NIDS on the initial stages provides advantages in terms of low system resource utilization and low overhead on leased bandwidth for the organization (Components of the cisco secure IDS, n.d). As soon as NIDS is implemented and configured properly, HIDS can be configured on individual machines. Likewise, the intrusion detection system is composed of two core components i.e. IDS sensors and Management control. Moreover, IDS sensor and management control integrates simultaneously to provide an IDS solution that is scalable for optimal network security. Furthermore, the sensor is used to examine the network traffic. Similarly, the management console that is the second part of one of the core components is used to examine and manage sensors for generating alarms and numerous activities as per requirements that are visible on a Graphical user interface (Components of the cisco secure IDS, n.d).

NIDS/HIDS provides functionality of following areas (Components of the cisco secure IDS, n.d):

  • Secure Extranets and examine traffic where restrictions or rules are set.
  • Securing Intranet for protecting mission critical systems from threats that may generate from the internal network
  • Securing Internet that may provide a gateway for threats
  • Securing remote access for preventing unauthorized access
