How can only an extra 200 calories a day result in overweight?
The concept of obesity is a result of eating too much food and not taking enough daily exercise. Modern society actually encourages poor diets and insufficient exercise. In 2003 research illustrated that Americans were eating more than 200 additional calories per day and this resulting in weight gain and obesity. This is compounded where people work in offices with a sedentary lifestyle and don’t take the required amount of exercise in order to burn off excess calorific intake. Cutting just 100 excess calories per day will result in an overall weight reduction of 10lbs in one year, whereas a cut of 500 calories per day can reduce body weight by as much as 50 pounds in a year. Walking briskly for just 20 minutes per day will lead to a body weight loss of 10 pounds per year whereas a 60 minute walk burns off around 300 calories leading to a body weight reduction of about 30 pounds in a year. Why might a sodium restricted diet be unpleasant for a client?
Sodium restricted diets limit the intake of the amount of sodium (salt) that reaches tissues and subsequently prevents the accumulation of fluids that encourage a loss of body water. This condition is an abnormality of the stomach where part of the stomach sticks out through the diaphragm into the chest. This is generally causes by an esophageal hiatus that is larger than normal. This creates an opening where it is possible for part of the stomach to slip into the chest. Treatment is accomplished through surgery; it involves the pulling down of the stomach into the abdomen and the esophageal hiatus being reduced in size. (Simic)
