Bilingualism in Politics

The first article is based on the aspect of Bilingualism and how it was a factor that served to assist Obama during the presidential campaigns in 2007. The article illustrated how Obama was pro Bilingualism, and that would serve to be a beneficial to his campaign. The aspect of bilingualism is a factor that can be considered to be a good and yet a bad thing in the case of Obama during the campaigns. (SBG Global)

The pro to the aspect of bilingualism is that Obama was believed to speak more than one language, which was an indication that he had an element of being diverse, which may serve to gain appeal from the Latino voters. On the other hand, it is a negative factor, as with regard to the fact that Americans consider themselves to be monolingual. This factor would have served to hurt Obama’s chance of getting elected. (SBG Global)

In the second article, it is based on illustrating the bilingualism is a ‘dirty’ word as it is not associated with the Americans as they are considered to monolingual. Even though the United States has a Latino influence, they are still considered to be foreigners or worse, ‘aliens’. It is this factor that serves to illustrate the Americans as a one language country with English as the only language they can speak. Anyone else is considered to be non-American. (Riehl, 2006)

The article illustrates how the knowledge as well as application of another language (other than English) as a factor that can advance the career of individuals in the United States, which may serve as a contradictory factor, based on the general perceptions of individuals.
