The Pill, Essay Example

Essay

It was hot summer when I first held a basketball ball in my hands – a giant orange with black strips running around its equator.

Belonging to a large middle-class family, my mother was an extremely demanding person. She always preached the necessity of sports, family and religious telling that they were the ways to become successful and educative. As well as my mother, my father believed that education was the only way to achieve success. That is why I, my brothers Dewayne, Vaughn, Kenrick and my sister Raye had a strong desire to be successful.

One Sunday afternoon my brothers and I were discussing the way of mine demeanor. Right that time our mother yelled my name. While we were running to help her, I stumbled over the steps and ended my trip rolling down until I got to the basis of the stairs. While I was moaning and groaning my parents and brothers decided to take me away to a doctor’s office.

The doctor’s room smelled like an elderly person would smell – cold and depressing. I was trying to relax but I felt like the butterflies were racing in my stomach and my heart was pounding so rapidly that my chest made my blue shirt raised. My mind was not completely focused on what the doctor was saying, but I understood that everything was all right. The doctor also examined my head because for several weeks it was aching so hard that I felt like a needle was poking me. Fortunately everything was good and the glasses were only needed. I felt a sense of relief, and I worried only about getting used to these extra eyes.

The next day after school, my friends from the city came to visit me. I was so happy and pleased to see them. We decided to play game and visit McDonald’s. While walking we were discussing my family and the way they helped me, my brothers and sister to achieve success. Our family retreat required a lot of brain power and strength that gave my brothers and me that strong desire to achieve the success. I told my friends that thanks to my parents and the discipline in our everyday life my brothers and sister improved their skills in sports and education. They studied to play basketball – the game millions of people became addicted to. My brother Vaughn called it “pill”. Other people gave the pill different names, such as, “Three on Three”, “Horse Shoe”, and “Hoops”. My friends were amazed and emphasized that I should be grateful to have a family that instilled care and structure in my life.

After our talk about the pill and the way this game influenced children and youth life we took a ball and went to the nearby court around the school. With the first threw of the ball in the air we became dependent of the pill. For my friends and me this event paved the way for a brighter future. My parents knew about my passion for the game. They decided to use basketball as a tool to keep my grades up and gave me structure and support in return.

I still feel happiness while telling the story about the pill and how I was introduced to this powerful and energetic game. The pill taught me to manage and follow my plans with a sense of joy and accomplishment. Thanks to the pill standard of duty, teamwork, discipline, and striving for a common goal helped me to be successful in any life experience.

Once with my family and friends we got back to the family room where the poster of my favorite celebrities covered the wall. Ribbons, trophies and pictures from basketball, volleyball, and track occupied shelf around the room. Each memorable moment from the prom, homecoming and competitions held lasting thoughts in my mind.
