Essay

The story is a reality of the poet trying to kill the old man; she narrates the turn of events, and how she could wake up daily at midnight to reach for the old man. The second stanza depicts that there was feelings of love involved, which was a sign of reality. When she was actualizing her threats, she yelled, “With a loud yell,” and the old man shrieked which attracted the neighbors. There is also a sign of reality because when the neighbors heard the noise they called the police who came to inquire about it, “A shriek had been heard by a neighbor during the night suspicion of foul play had been aroused, information had been lounged at the police office, and they (officers) had been deputed to search the premises”.  This shows that it was a reality rather than a dream. The flow of events in the poem indicates that it practically took place. The ending also is not sharp as normally witnessed in dreams but is rather gradually as in real scenarios.

I agree with the interpretation that there is no defense against the thing that will kill an individual. In the story, “The Masque of the Red Death,” the Prince Prospero is full of joy because of his dominion and security he is accorded and the extreme and magnificent structure he owns. In his an apartment, there was all pleasures “There were buffoons, improvisatory, there were ballet-dancers, there were musicians, there was beauty and wine”. The prince also had a tight security in the apartment. Despite all the security available to him, death was unavoidable; death creeps like a thief, the Prince face the Red Death he could not control his death nor predicts it.

The speaker in The Raven is not reliable in his story; he does not clearly bring about the visitor’s entrance into his chamber door. It was just a tapping at the door, in stanza 1 he says, “Tis some visitor, I muttered, tapping at my chamber door-only this and nothing more”, there is no real evidence that there is a visitor. The speaker does not clearly bring about the turn of events in his story he is not sure about the happenings, “   This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing, To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core; This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining”. This makes his story unreliable he depends on guessing.

Victor Frankestin in the novel “FRANKENSTEIN” by Mary Shelley and Doctor Rappaccini in the novel “Rappaccini’s Daughter” has a number of similarities in their character and attitude. They are both engrossed in their development in science and can give up anything to gain scientifically. They are selfish and portray self-interest in their scientific endeavors. Victor discovers and brings a hidden monster to life, which led to death of his close relatives, yet he has no regrets for this. Rappaccini on the other hand, cares more for science than for humankind; he protects himself against harm by using protective clothing and minds if not others use the same in his garden. They are also inhuman for they use their scientific ability to develop themselves at the expense of the lives of their victims.
