Pages: 1

Words: 313

Essay

One of the most critical issues that have risen to the forefront in the past decades is the policy on welfare. One of the most essential questions, is determining who gets what, and who deserves more. Many people are a concern without how much should the government spend on welfare programs, and how to effectively end the problems of poverty. The debate is seemingly between social welfare and corporate welfare. Based out of the conservative thought, there is a negative connotation behind the word, welfare, because there have been several cases where people have abused the system, that have been sensationalized by the media. The welfare system was born out of the era of the Great Depression which millions of people dependent on the system for handouts; food, shelter, and cash.

Welfare provides a safety net for people, where in America the number of jobs cannot satisfy the number of people in the employment pool.  New Deals were created to relieve the economic downturn, but many felt that people were depending on entitlements from the government. Social welfare programs have progressed to include educational development, nutritional education, and other programs that help individuals. The crisis that is has created is that people have become supportive of reducing funding, but they do not realize the number of individuals that depend on programs such as Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid for benefits ranging from healthcare, housing, and food. Most of the people that receive welfare are children, and the number of individuals live under the line of poverty. If I was President, there would be certain changes made to not only provide support for individuals, but also provide a way to actually solve the root of the problem. Create initiatives that tacked poor neighbors, programs that provide education for jobs, create more jobs, improve transportation access, and provide more opportunities for people to go to college.
