Words: 317

Essay

As a graduate student in the nursing program, employing an authentic transformational servant leader in order to influence positive changes across the healthcare spectrum, is essential to my foundation. For the Graduate Nursing Program Outcomes, it is a fundamental aspect that I believe every nurse and member of the medical field should obtain. As a servant leader, the goal is to inspire and motivate change by building community, commitment, stewardship, foresight, conceptualization, persuasion, healing, awareness, empathy, and most of all listening. (Northouse, 2013) In being both a transformative leader and a servant leader is to put followers first, while also helping others to grow and succeed. In conveying these leadership aspect, it is the responsibility is to perform with ethical standards that creates value, and empowers those around me.

This is the scripture I remind myself of every day, to strengthen my faith especially with school, and my busy life. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me” (King James Version). Working with mental health patients comes with challenges that could test not only people’s faith, but their leadership skills, however, in being a servant leader, authentic leadership focuses on being a real and genuine leader. With already 10 years of working with patients that suffer from debilitating conditions, patience as well as a strong commitment to the field of nursing has help to guide me through this graduate program. Being an authentic transformational servant leader means to be held accountable for helping, motivating, and inspiring others, or followers, to walk in faith, not sight. It means to be authentic to my character, as well as my ethical-value base of why I was called to the nursing field. By being a light for others, I am constantly influencing positive changes to the patients, to my colleagues, to the organization, and the entire healthcare spectrum.
