The Road Puppets, Poem Example

Out in the desert mornin’

Bakin’ up like toasted bread,

Sittin’ ‘longside of dusty roads

‘Til I’m burnt up good and dead.

And some nobody out there,

Known as a ramblin’ man,

Tryin’ to make a livin’ drives and stops…

…stops…

…stops…

Sees us sittin’ in the desert sand,

And then he stops and thinks about it…

Who could they be?

Are they killers, are they drifters,

Are they gonna try and steal from me?

And the ramblin’ man,

Well, he’s doin’ the best he can,

But he jets…

…jets…

…jets…

And leaves us standin’ in the sand

Road puppets,

Road mannequins,

Road cardboard paper cutouts,

Standin’ there in the hot sun

Well, they might be saints

And they might be scum,

And they leave behind

Where they started from,

And I just don’t know who

Those guys could even be…

But road puppets,

Road puppets,

Road-ruled-desert-schooled-never-fooled road puppets
