The Role of Ethical Culture and Relationships, Essay Example

Essay

The most important thing that I learned from this chapter is that “the ‘tone at the top’ is the determining factor in the creation of a high-integrity organization” and how that can translate into a fair, trustworthy, functional, and admirable set of ethics values such as those of Wells Fargo. I see these ethics as extremely important to every aspect of my life, which includes my work and future career. (I am in accounting and have no internship.) I am going to prepare for my master degree because it will increase my awareness of how a code of ethics develops in an organization or corporation and how I will be able to do my part in ensuring that it resembles as closely as possible those of Wells Fargo. I believe that if I were to implement a set of ethics in my everyday life that resemble as closely as possible those of Wells Fargo, they would automatically also be my code of ethics at my work and my future career. A cursory glance at these codes might get some people to ask, “What is so difficult about those?”Some of the ones that look the easiest, in practise might be the most difficult. To “value and reward open and honest two-way communication” should be so easy, but in actual fact can be very difficult. If individuals are afraid to be honest and open with certain people for fear of retribution, they may refrain from so doing; and then, sometimes those people that seem to stifle open communication in others will say when the going gets tough, “Well, I cannot read your mind!” Another ethical behaviour that many people find difficult is to apologize and learn from their mistakes and not do them again; but instead they become defensive and accusative. Many people learn too late about the value of this important behaviour. I, however, hope that it and the other important Wells Fargo ethical behaviours will always be an integral part of my life.

I am perfectly clear about the main topic of this chapter, which is “The role of corporate culture in ethical decision making” It is this point—and using Wells Fargo’s code of ethics values as one outcome example thereof– that I am ready to share with the check-in section.
