In contemporary world many government systems incorporate the role and position of the governor, who is considered to be the head of non-sovereign state. Each and every state within the U.S. has a governor position, with a person who is runs certain state affairs. Depending on the state constitution, the governor is delegated different duties and requirements, thus it determines the age requirement and allowed number of terms a candidate can be elected for. However, there still some similar governor duties and responsibilities among all the states.

In each and every state, the governor fulfils the executive branch of the government, thus being the state chief executive. He also manages state budged and is responsible for military maintenance. According to the Constitution of the United States the governor has a right to fill vacancies in the two Senate seats of the states. For example, in the state of Georgia, the governor in empowered to veto the legislation provided by the Georgia General Assembly. However, the two-thirds of the House of Representatives and Senate can overturn the veto by voting. Governor is also entitled to fill vacancies in both houses of Assembly. The governor controls the budget, even though the Georgia General Assembly sets this budget, thus he can allocate the budged in accordance with his political followers and associates. Moreover, the Georgia governor and the leaders of other state departments are not equal, thus he is ranked relatively higher.

United States governors also participate in foreign affairs, due to the initiation of Homeland Security Bureau, thus they are required to be familiar with all the security procedures. Apart from international politics they can influence the decision made in the sphere of national policy as well. The duties and responsibilities of the governor can expand depending on the person who occupies the position. The Unites States governor system took its origin from British colonial rule, but it has ultimately changed to suit the needs of each and every state.
