The Romance of Magno Rubio, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 306

Essay

The below analysis is designed to reveal the unique characteristics of Nick, the narrator of the story in “The Romance of Magno Rubio”. The character will be analyzed base on his attitudes, appearance, and motivations for his actions.

Unique characteristics

Nick, as the narrator, speaks in a past tense, and this way he is distanced from the rest of the characters. His language is also more sophisticated; he does not only tell the story, but reflects on the events as well. While he is a part of the story and converses with the other people, he is an outsider; being teased about going to college. He is not the one asking the questions; others are. Nick is a kind of authority figure, who writes Magno’s letters and has a perspective in life. He declares: “We were all born honest. But along the way some of us lost our honesty”. (Carter 15). He does not say immediately what he thinks; he reflects on the idea first, and that is what sets him apart from other characters.

Motivations and actions

As Magno states: Nick does not drink, does not chase girls. He wants to be educated and become a poet; he reads instead of drinking wine and playing purposeless games with others. He is worried about Magno and sees that the passion he feels for Clarabella is destroying him. Still, he says that one has to lose everything to find himself. He tries to warn Magno, but knows that it is in vain. Nick knows that nobody can influence Magno Rubio, and disappointment will make him stronger eventually.

Conclusion

The character of Nick is superior to the other Filipino men living in the bunkhouse. He has a clear motivation in life, and he tries to educate himself to understand people and feelings better.
