The Souls of Black Folk, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 273

Essay

In “The Souls of Black Folk”, W.E.B. asserts that the color line is a major issue in the 20th century. Even after major race conflicts and the plight towards equality, there is still a clear divide between individuals of different ethnicities. Thus, even though we recognize that there is a race problem, there have not been major strides towards removing the racial barriers that currently exist. This statement is certainly applicable to the 21st century because the color line still exists, but it is present in a different form. Rather than physically segregating individuals on the basis of race, we continue to do so in our minds, which contributes to many of the social problems that exist today.

One of the major points explained by W.E.B. in “The Damnation of Women” is that women must give up all of their opportunities in order to ensure that they are good parents. This is likened to the suffering faced by the black community because they are also discriminated against. An additional point in this article is that there should be a revolution among women just as there was a revolution among the black community. This type of support helped bolster women’s rights organizations and the shared fight that both they and women had towards achieving equal civil rights. A third point made in this essay is that it is important to remove both gender and race norms. It is important to emphasize that how we view people is primarily due to how society has constructed their image. It is therefore necessary to deconstruct this image so that we are able to strive for a perfect world.
