The Stonehenge, Essay Example

Essay

Among the different man-made wonders in the world, few are as mysterious as the Stonehenge. The Stonehenge is located in Wiltshire, which is a county in the southern part of the United Kingdom. It was estimated that the Stonehenge was built in 2300 BC. Speculations as to who built Stonehenge have been formulated by many. Many ancient peoples have been identified as the possible builders of Stonehenge. One popular story is that the landmark was erected by ancient druids. This theory was formed after records were found by historians revealing that there had been a flourishing Celtic religion in the area where the Stonehenge was built during the time that the Romans first arrived in the area. Another theory is that the landmark was built by many different civilizations throughout the years, with one civilization adding to the contribution of previous civilizations. It is even claimed by some that humans did not have the technology necessary to build such a landmark 5000 years ago, and that a more likely theory is that Stonehenge was constructed by intelligent beings with advanced technology. The reasons behind the construction of the Stonehenge also vary. It was claimed by some archeologists that the Stonehenge was used as a place of healing. The inner circle of the landmark is composed of bluestones, which were believed by people of ancient times to have healing powers. Furthermore, the ancient remains of people from places that were very distant from Stonehenge were found in graves that were near the landmark, indicating the people far and wide went travelled to Stonehenge. However, another explanation for this is that the landmark was used as an altar of sacrifice, where strangers who entered the land were put to death and offered to the gods.
