Pages: 2

Words: 555

Essay

Psychology is the study of the human mind. The human brain is the core of the thoughts that each individual forms, so it is important to understand the mind in order to gain a better understanding of human existence. Many psychologists are concerned with discovering the relationship between the brain and behavior. As a result, this field reflects both the study of normal thoughts and behaviors in addition to the ones that are considered to be abnormal. By comparing different behaviors that people enact as a consequence of their thoughts, it is possible to determine why people are exhibiting abnormal behaviors by studying the interactions that both normal and mentally disabled individuals have with their environment.

There are many different fields that are included in the broad term psych0ology. These include: Industrial Organizational Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Experimental and Human Factors Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Psychology, Health Psychology, Family Psychology, and more. Because it is important for individuals working in many different disciplines to gain an understanding of the human mind, there are many diverse fields. For example, business psychologists use what they understand about people to determine how to design effective work teams and training programs. On the other hand, educators attempt to determine how they can use this understanding to teach students in the most effective manner. As a consequence, it is apparent that psychology covers a broad understanding. In the professional setting, it primarily involves determining how to build relationships between employees. In academic, researchers aim to find new ways to diagnose and treat patients with erratic behaviors or mental disorders, or to simply determining new information about the brain.

Many different psychological methods can be used. Counselors use many different forms of therapy, for example, which could include individual therapy or group therapy. Individual therapy is more intimate and allows a client to interact more with the therapist, while group therapy allows individuals to connect with the group and learn new techniques about coping with their difficulties. There are also many different research techniques associated with psychology as well. Some researchers, for example, perform descriptive research and case studies in order to gain an understanding of a particular group or case based on observation. Others conduct experimental studies. An example of this would be determining the difference in brain wave frequency between individuals with and without diseases. Overall, the field of psychology is comprehensive so it is challenging to discuss the many different techniques used in research and therapy in a detailed manner. Furthermore, as researchers continue to contribute to the field, the resources that psychologists have available to them will increase.

Sigmund Freud is considered to be the “father of modern psychology”. As a consequence, he has provided us with observational and experimental results that have positively contributed to our understanding of psychology today. Modern researchers continue to contribute to this understanding that he put forth. We now understand how different parts of the brain control behavior and functionality. Furthermore, we even understand the genetic background of many mental disorders in addition to the environmental factors that cause them. Conducting psychology research has allowed us to gain a greater understanding of the human mind and human nature. Even though the brain is complex, psychologists help us understand how we think and how this information can be used in a constructive manner.
