The Systemic Approach, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 302

Essay

The systemic approach is a valuable method used in family therapy because it allows the therapist to determine how to best help strengthen family relationships by understanding the specific context of their problem. Since the issues that cause each family to seek counseling are unique, this method takes this into consideration. Therefore, the therapist is responsible for gaining a greater understanding of the family’s relationship and their interactions in order to gain a greater conceptualization of which behaviors need to be modified in addition to changes that can be made to serve as a form of intervention.

While it is important to consider each family situation unique, it is also important to consider that they likely fall into a larger category of problems. Therefore, many family therapists have a particular area of specialty, and some therapists are more adept at working with families with certain categories of problems than others. Research comes into play in this area, because there is a lot of knowledge that these professionals can contribute to other researchers in order to ensure that they have a well-balanced skill set. To initiate research studies that utilize this therapy method, it would be beneficial for the therapist to identify changes that have occurred since the problem has surfaced in addition to how each family member expresses him or herself. A comparison of the “normal” and “current” situation will provide the researcher with valuable evidence that will indicate the source of the family’s problem.

A limitation of this particular method is that it is difficult to apply these findings to a broad range of individuals. Since this data would be for a particular subset of families, it is important for the researcher to emphasize the specific target population that he or she believes it will be useful for when the information is reported.
