The Three Types of Unemployment, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 267

Essay

The three types of unemployment include structural unemployment, frictional unemployment, and cyclical unemployment (Econport). Structural unemployment occurs when an individual was mismatched due to his or her original job with regards to the skill set needed to operate efficiently. Frictional unemployment results from temporary transitions made by workers and employers. Cyclical unemployment results from a poor economy and is based on the fact that when there is a poor economy, there will be less jobs available.

All three types of unemployment are undesirable, but individuals can have varying levels of control over each. For example, individual workers cannot control cyclical unemployment because they are unable to control the economy. On the other hand, workers have a greater extent of control over structural employment because this results from an inability to find a job that is a good match for their particular skill set. Individuals could improve their skill set in order to prevent happening again.

The advent of the internet can mostly eliminate frictional unemployment because it helps employers connect with potential employees quickly and effectively. This indicates that if people are not finding jobs, this is likely because there is not an adequate number of positions available, which is likely due to economic problems. If frictional unemployment is removed, people will have a greater degree of control over their employment because if they work to improve their skills and diversify the types of jobs they are applying to, they will be more likely to get hired at a job that serves as a good fit for them.
