Sitting at home had become dull, and Mark decided it was time they made a short trip to the supermarket for some snacks. Jane was already set and was the first to enter the truck. They took to the highway, and Mark started to accelerate as he periodically kept staring at the clouds. “Are you speeding because it is about to rain?” Jane inquired as she also stared outside. Mark chuckled and could only shake his head to say no. “Please do not drive us into a ditch, and why are you so afraid of the rain? I thought that is why there is a roof over the truck,” she sarcastically said, only to receive a blank stare from Mark. Before coming to a halt, Mark precisely made impressive parallel parking and could not wait to brag about it. “Now that is amazing, and that is my spot,” he said, smiling broadly.
“You have been driving for a month, and this is the first time we have come to the supermarket with your dad’s truck,” Jane replied in an attempt to tease him. Mark cynically glanced at her as they slowly walked into their favourite supermarket. “Do you think that is economical?” She asked, smiling as she looked at Mark’s hand gripping hers tightly. “What do you mean?” he asked, looking surprised. “Okay, are you holding my hand to prevent me from going to every section in the supermarket?” she asked, pretending to look down at the ground. Mark let her hand free laughing. Mark paced up as they went to the snacks section to look at the new snacks available. “This one is chocolate-coated,” Mark said as he placed the selected snack into the trolley.
“Why are you not responding?” Mark merely turned to raise his voice, only to realize he had been talking to himself all along. “No wonder the couple was curiously staring at me,” he sarcastically remarked, looking back at the elderly couple standing several feet away from where he was. He shouted out Jane’s name, thinking she was playing a prank on him. He started walking back, peeping at every corner, only to see Jane at the toy section, staring at the biggest teddy bear. Jane looked at him innocently as he slowly walked towards her. “What is that for?” He inquired as Jane feigned to frown as she touched the teddy bear. “It is for our child,” she replied. “What child are you talking about?” Mark asked, seemingly surprised. “I mean our future child,” she said, smiling, knowing it was her only justification of being at the toy section. Mark knew she loved teddy bears and immediately realized it was an excuse. He took her hands and gently pulled her away. Mark always knew Jane was fascinated by teddy bears and children, a topic they had earlier shared many times. In his mind, he was still trying to figure out how she silently slipped away without him knowing.
“Did you get them?” Jane asked. “Get what?” Marked replied with a startled expression. “The twinkies, or what were you to buy?” she asked. “Oh, yes,” Mark said. “I did when you disappeared.” “No, I was just distracted,” Jane replied, smiling as they strolled quietly back to the vehicle, hands still tightly held together. Jane suddenly rushed to unlocking the truck doors and calmly sat on the driver’s seat. Mark was unmoved by this behaviour since she had many times insisted on driving. “Did you obtain your driver’s license from a store, or did you lose track of where you were sitting?” Mark sarcastically asked as he directed her to the passenger seat. “I did not, as I can easily learn it from YouTube,” she replied. “You are the truck’s DJ, and driving should be left to me,” Mark remarked, shaking his head and singing an inventive tune in his mind. When they left the supermarket, the sky was clear, giving Mark more confidence in driving through the already building up traffic.
The trip seemed brief as they sang along to another song and waved their hands. Jane nodded dramatically while also dancing as they pulled up to their garage. “Do you have the house keys?” Mark asked as Jane looked surprised, only to walk and open the door. “You are full of drama,” Mark said as he laughed, and at this time, Jane was displaying a falsified sad expression. “Okay, I know what you are trying to do, and I am not going to fall for that this time,” he said while also pretending to be looking inside the shopping bag. As Mark walked to the kitchen counter, Jane rushed to the fridge and grabbed an apple juice as she happily extended her hands towards Mark. “What is it now?” Mark asked, knowing well she wanted a snack. “My chocolate cake twinkie,” She replied. “I only bought one chocolate cake twinkie, and the other is banana-flavoured,” Mark replied as he looked for a glass. “You went and disappeared, and I assumed that you were okay with whatever I had bought since you also never questioned me further at the supermarket,” he said as he sat next to her.
“What do you mean I disappeared, and you know I love chocolate,” she said as she placed her juice on the counter. “I am going to eat that single chocolate cake twinkie while you eat the banana one,” she said, this time looking angry and moving towards the shopping bag. Knowing the strategy in place, Mark took the shopping bag and placed it close to him. “I want the chocolate twinkie now !” She said as she grabbed her shoes in an attempt to throw them. Mark quickly took out the chocolate-flavoured twinkie and placed it in his pocket. “I too love chocolate,” Mark said, and before she could know what was going on, he was pacing fast out of the kitchen. “I am going to starve myself until I get the chocolate twinkie!” she sarcastically shouted. Tempers escalated when Mark decided to open the snack in an attempt to eat it. “I dare you to eat it,” she said, now seeming very annoyed by this. “ But you had the chance to come and select your favourite, and you did not even ask what flavour I bought until we came back home,” Mark said as he rested his legs on the table. Jane was speechless. “You can eat the other one because it is sweet too,” Mark said, seemingly unbothered. “So I should keep telling you what I love like we have not been together for six years?” Jane said, waving his shoe in the air again in an attempt to scare Mark away.
Mark was unmoved this time, looking exhausted. “You are silent now?” Jane asked as Mark bit the snack and switched on the television. Before he could open his mouth for another bite, Jane snatched the snack and ran to their room as Mark chased her down. “You are not fair because you had the chance to select what you desired, but you are out here all citing selfishness over something that I chose,” “Why did you not help me out when you had the chance?” he asked, seemingly helpless as Jane had already locked the door by the time he was approaching the door. “You thought you were clever enough to buy one chocolate twinkie for yourself and leave me the banana flavour?” Jane shouted as she tapped the door. “That is your punishment now,” she said, and by this time, Mark had had enough and walked away, making his footsteps audible enough for Jane to know that he was not willing to continue the conversation.
