A social entrepreneur is an individual who perceives a social challenge and reso90lves it. Commercial entrepreneurs form and convert industries. Social entrepreneurs respond as agents of change (Oregon Public Broadcasting, 2005).

The risks for a social entrepreneur are that the endeavors to generate social value instead of capitalistic profit can cause problems to become apparent. These problems quite often require greater social consideration and engagement than the social entrepreneur can provide (Oregon Public Broadcasting, 2005).

The similarities are that the social entrepreneur and the business entrepreneur are agents of change.   The motivation for the social entrepreneur is to create change. This social change frequently requires more resources than the social entrepreneur has available for its resolution. The business entrepreneur seeks to fill a need and supply the resources required for the fulfillment of the need. The business entrepreneur aims to extract a financial gain from the resolution of the problem. The financial gain enables the financiering of the costs of the change. The social entrepreneur seeks to be an educator (Oregon Public Broadcasting, 2005).

An example of social entrepreneurship that can be effective is the promotion of environmental conservation. Considering the limited resou5rces available and the dimensions of the social problem, the social entrepreneur may only have the capacity of being an educator with regards to the stakeholders (Oregon Public Broadcasting, 2005).   .

An example of a social entrepreneur is a community or environmental activists. There are distinct scales of community activism. Vice- President Al Gore and Dr. Martin Luther King are examples of social entrepreneurs. Challenges were identified by Dr. Martin Luther King.   Challenges have been identified by Vice- President Gore. The social entrepreneur takes the responsibility of educating the affected populations with regards to accepting the social change. Vice- President Al Gore is an example of a social entrepreneur who is promoting global environmental awareness with regards to the causes and the potential outcomes of global warming (Drache, 2008).
