The UULO Guidelines, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 654

Essay

The UULO guidelines were established to ensure that all students complete their college degree in a manner that allows them to become well versed in their chosen disciplines. As a consequence, these individuals will be able to enter their careers well-prepared in a manner that will allow them to continue to build upon the skills learned in school. It is helpful that these guidelines ensure that students follow a sequence of learning, as this will help build a foundation for knowledge that could be built upon by higher level of classes and specialized experiences. Ultimately, this will lead to a greater understanding of the information learned, which will allow it to be practically useful.

In addition to providing all students with a means by which learning can be achieved, the program helps us learn a variety of subjects that we can apply not only to our chosen career, but to our daily lives as well. In doing so, we will learn critical thinking and analysis skills that will help us incorporate knowledge into our work and to work effectively in our chosen careers. Furthermore, since the program enables us to enhance our communication skills, we will be valuable team members in the work setting. A related commitment to ethics will allow us to ensure that we are making the correct decisions in academia, which will translate to success in life.

I would be able to benefit by focusing on achieving these goals throughout my education at UNLV because doing so will help me understand how to build connections between what is learned in school and how it will help me in real life. College is a good time for someone to learn how to improve upon themselves in a manner that will benefit them positively the remainder of their career.

I could benefit by focusing my efforts to achieve intellectual breadth and lifelong learning because doing so will help me continue to learn even when I am working full-time. It is important to continue to learn in order to become higher up in an industry or chosen field. Intellectual breadth is important to me specifically because I am not certain what type of career I want to have, so it is important for me to be equally aware of diverse subjects so that I am prepared for when I finally make this choice.

The second UULO states that by the time I graduate, I should be able to identify questions and to analyze information to find the answers. The ability to do so is practical in the work world because it is necessary to be able to work independently. This will allow me to have a greater understanding of information and allow me to think about it critically. I like to learn, so this will enable me to not just memorize facts, but to comprehend them as well.

Communication is an important skill to learn because in the modern world, there are many means by which people can communicate and each of these ways have different rules that should be followed. As someone who was born during the time of cell phones, I occasionally use improper English when typing messages, including text messages and e-mails. I want to work towards correcting these habits and learning good ways to present information for projects, as these skills will be useful to me after graduation. This is related to my need to develop multicultural knowledge and awareness, because it is important that I communicate with these individuals in a manner that shows that I am aware of their culture and so that I can create projects that address my audience.

Lastly, I will benefit by including citizenship and ethics in my education because it will help me be able to make responsible decisions that range from actions taken in my personal life to actions taken in academics. I think that this and the other guidelines will make me become a better person overall.
