Education per se is a learning that one gains from someone or something that enhances his knowledge and expertise regarding a matter that interests him the most. Through the years though, education has taken a new picture of becoming more compulsory than enjoyable. It has become more of a forced instance than a desired result from one’s own efforts and applied understanding of their own situation. Relatively, Hooks’ written work describes how much she values education and how she views its importance in her personal being and development.

Edrich’s essay provides a definite form of description on how modern learning is able to make the best out of what is already in the society as a part of a person’s new being. Making a considerable distinction on what formal and informal learning is, Edrich tries to manifest the importance of meaning in one’s education. Learning for a reason is a better course to take than the idea of simply learning because one was ordered to do so. Defying a set of curriculum that is offered in schools and universities, Edrich makes it a point that learning is described as something desired more than just needed.  The ways by which she tried to acquire the excellence that she wants to make herself engaged in were considerably personal hence making up her course of learning more definitive than directed by her teachers. The author points out that choosing her teachers was rather personal making the learning more inspirational and reflective. With regards language learning, Hooks agrees that it should be considered an effective tool for teaching hence should be learned continuously and seriously by those who wish to use it as a form of manifesting the most important aspect of language which is communication. With this, learning becomes a necessity and a desire all at the same time.

Hooks’ points out that a more directed learning as assisted through educational institutions pays much more than inspirational learning as it is. Although she does define language to be an effective tool, motivation through direction and insisted development is viewed by Hooks as something essential. The contrast in learning is specifically considered to have a difference when it comes to the student’s vision of education. Not all students are like Edrich. The enthusiasm over a subject matter, a lesson or a specific topic cannot be immediately acquired, hence, for formal learning, education is essential of becoming compulsory and directed rather than enjoyable as described by Eldrich. The argument between the two authors then depend on the willingness of the student to learn inspires him further like that of Eldrich. However, for the sake of considering the situation of the general public, learning has become hierarchical in arrangement so as to make sure that the direction of the students would be well defined hence insisting that they learn from what they are being taught by their instructors. Learning this way would make it easier for them to make their lessons as the basis of their life’s progress and development in the future. Eldrich’s ideal vision on learning as countered by the ideas of Hooks specifically point out that students, as individuals as they are, have unique procedures of learning that specifically works for them. Notably, such procedures specifically create an impact on how much they are able to learn from the kind of lessons and subjects presented to them regardless of whether or not they are interested in the topics.
