Theater of Dionysus, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

The theater of Dionysus is was an open air amphitheater located in Athens, Greece. It can be found upon the south slope of the cities acropolis.  Although it is believed to date back to antiquity, there were most likely numerous restorations done throughout the years. The modern form of the theater appears to have been a Roman restoration.  When looking at the theater now, it seems simple. It is primarily built of stone seating rising up around a central stage.  However, it has been found that the acoustic properties of the buildings were almost perfect, meaning that their construction must have had quite a bit of forethought.  It was originally built as an ]memorial in honor of the god Dionysus, who was the patron of wine and theater.  It was alleged by the Greeks at the time that the god had been the one who had actually built the theater.  As the years progressed, though, it evolved to be the place where many of the Greek’s first dramatic plays were held.

Around the fifth century, as their democratic ideas began to take hold, the Greeks began to represent their gods in the form of tragic plays, and so a location for their performances that all people could take part in became necessary.  Theses plays were put on for more than just entertainment, though, as the tragic Greek poets were said to have competed with one another in honor of their patron god.  The plays were for not only enjoyment, but for religious worship and to inspire political discussion.  In this way, the performances became a center for social gatherings during the various Greek festivals throughout the year.
