Essay

Introduction

A professional philosophy of nursing requires a clear understanding of the core values, expectations, strengths, weaknesses, and responsibilities of the profession in order to support a framework to improve quality of care and to facilitate the integration of personal values and beliefs to improve the lives of patients and the practice environment.

Nursing requires a caring and nurturing environment to improve patient care quality.

  1. Florence Nightingale held strong beliefs regarding the paradigm of caring in and nature in the nursing profession (Jarrin, 2012)
  2. Nurses must be able to provide effective and consistent care in the nursing environment to improve quality of life for all patients (Jarrin, 2012)

Holistic nursing is an essential characteristic of the practice environment to promote caring and compassion among nurses, as well as patient healing and recovery (Dossey & Keegan 2012)

  1. Nurses must serve in a healing capacity to support patient care outcomes and to encourage self-care as warranted (Dossey & Keegan, 2012)
  2. Holistic nursing requires practical and compassionate approaches to patient care to promote healing and long-term recovery from illness and disease across all population groups (Dossey & Keegan, 2012)

Nurses must grow into their roles and support a climate of change and progress (Masters, 2014)

  1. This requires a strong and dedicated focus to the nursing profession and the goals that are desired (Meehan, 2014)
  2. Nurses must encourage each other and collaborate to meet the needs of the profession in a positive manner (Masters, 2014)

Conclusion

A personal nursing philosophy requires an understanding of the different elements which impact the practice environment. Nurses must embody compassion, acceptance, support, knowledge, and technical skill in working with their patients. A holistic environment that supports healing is essential to the success of the practice setting and the needs that must be served.
