Theory in Clinical Practice, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 283

Essay

It is important to understand the literature that has been published on a particular therapy method and its extensions before utilizing it in order to ensure that the therapist can achieve maximal efficacy with the family that he or she is working with. Evidence-based practice plays a major role in ensuring that this is the case because it allows the therapist to have a greater understanding of the techniques that have worked or failed for others. Therefore, they can build upon existing knowledge during their own practice, and report confirmation or denial of the validity of these studies by publishing their own report.

Ultimately, in an ideal setting, marriage and family therapy works in a cycle in relation to evidence-based practice. Practitioners are expected to base their decisions off of the literature and contribute back to the literature in order to further the field. It is difficult to completely validate each treatment and therapy method utilized in the field, which is what makes contributing the knowledge of each researcher to others so important. Therefore, therapists are currently facing new situations that requires them to modify their existing knowledge to be able to help their patients. Building upon evidence-based practice is a necessary component of this, as it gives these researchers a valuable starting point for their work with each family.

In order to ensure that contributing to evidence-based practice is possible for each practitioner, it is essential for them to take good notes during their sessions. It is likely that a technique or modification that was helpful for one family will apply to the unique situation of another, so it is important to report these findings so that they may be applied across the board.
