The Imogene King: Theory of Goal Attainment implicitly and explicitly explains the four basic paradigms of nursing. It defines all four paradigms as central to the attainment of the purpose of the theory. It takes into consideration the human being as a person that is sentient and rational with the ability to perceive, feel, choose and make decisions.

The theory of goal attainment is not anchored around pre-existing theories. It is not founded in concepts similar to other nursing theories of its time. Instead it takes a different approach towards nursing and the roles of the patient in nursing care.

The theory of goal attainment effectively predicts outcomes and phenomena. It explains the potential positive or negative that the environment has on an individual’s health. Developing health goals and targets with the patient enhances the efficiency of nursing care. In a clinical setting, the theory can be applied by a care giver assisting the patient positively adapt to the changes experienced on their health by using the environment.

The theory of goal attainment has been articulated clearly, using minimal jargon. Most of the terms employed exists within other context and theories in the field of nursing. All concepts sub-concepts have also been well-defined. This makes considerably easy to understand and even apply. The theory of goal attainment has a fairly simple structure that makes it quite simple to apply. However, this model’s applications is limited to areas which the patient is responsive to stimuli.

Imogene M. King and her theory, the theory of goal attainment have had a tremendous impact on nursing practice. Her principles on the significance of the roles played by the nurse and the patient in nursing care have considerably influenced my career in nursing. She sets up a model that takes into consideration the social aspects of nursing care.
