Therapeutic Communication Project, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 332

Essay

Therapeutic Communication Project seems to take a humorous approach to the issues that are being addressed.  The introduction of the characters is done in a fun and interesting way.  In approaching patients, the video on therapeutic communication provides an example of how to deal with a patient who is dealing with issues in a negative way.  The scenes provide demonstrations on how not to act as well, in the case in which the caretaker wasn’t paying attention to what the patient really needed.  These scenes were all done in a way that seems to be comedic, while at the same time, providing valuable information.  Skills such as active listening, confirming specific facts, and providing helpful advice to patients are covered in this way, which promotes the active interest of the viewer.

Knocked Up provides a short clip of the Hollywood movie and demonstrates the importance of doctors listening to patients.  The doctor in the scene seems incredibly frustrated to be doing their job, and is not even attempting to have a conversation with his patients.  The way in which he discusses the issue with the father and comes to an agreement with him provides insight into the importance of doctors establishing healthy relationships with their patients.

How might what you do or don’t about the cultural programming of others in a health care workplace impact your ability to be an effective communicator? How can you learn more?

The cultural programming that an individual has, and often does not realize, can have a profound impact on their relationships with others.  These underlying premises in regards to how people act in situations, and how they generally view the world, can have lasting effects on the social ability for them to communicate.  For this reason, it is important to understand the impact that these factors can have on their concern for working together in a cohesive manner.
