Essay

‘This is America’ is a song addressing the many shootings happening in the United States. It goes ahead by questioning racial discrimination prevalent in the USA. The message in the music made it trend in a lot of countries. During the 61st Grammy, the song won four trophies in different categories. Its focus is on the lives of blacks and how they face racism in the USA. The song captures the brutality and misconduct of the police. According to Kearse, the song represents the tough lives experienced by the Blacks in America.

The Video of the song has many scenes expressing violence directed to the Blacks. The shooting of a Black man is in one of the sets. There is also a shooting of choir members to indicate massive killings in the USA. Other parts of the movie show pupils trying to record the chaos erupting in the Video. The film features vehicles from the olden days indicating hazards towards the car door; investigators believe this was a way to enhance police shooting. There is a line in the song saying this is ‘celly’; the meaning of this line is to pinpoint the shooting of Clark. Clark was a Blackman shot by White police; the police were assuming that Clark had a gun, but he had an iPhone in the real sense. In most scenarios, police believe that Blacks carry a firearm, the ‘tool’ described in the song. However, this is not the case; most of the time, they have phones to capture police brutality. At the end of the film, Gambino was in the dark part of the warehouse. The chasing of Gambino by the Whites resembles some features in the Get Out movie.

The singer talks about how hard it is for Black Americans to make wealth amid hate and discrimination. The song has several covers done by different producers. The singer is trying to enlighten the people they have nowhere to run to; the only is to fight hate and violence to have a good life—the way Gambino dances in the clip indicates how people embrace the culture. The dance moves are a mixture of African and Hip hop. Ramsey’s view is that cultures lose their originality as they continue to acquire from different cultures.

He continues by saying there is a lot of confusion and violence formulating as people continue embracing the modern culture. In the part of the shooting is where Gambino gun down choir members singing in a church. This shooting recalls the killings of Blacks done by Roof, a powerful Whiteman. The image and what it is expressing are how people struggle to unite and do away with their differences. Ramsey says it is hard to stop murders if we continue to consume violence on almost every platform, be it videos or televisions.

Risher says the song is a representation of America through a lens of Blacks’ experience. He says when the majority of people watch the music; they stop and think. The thinking is on how a Black person will survive in the United States.

The singer is afraid. He is running away from some people. In this instance, Young sings one is a black person and just a barcode. Gambino is running very fast towards the black people. His mission is to go and save their lives. According to Ramsey, one song that defined the Blacks was run and run. From the times of slavery, the Black Americans had been running for their lives. The injustices expressed to the Blacks make them be always on the run.
