Essay

How Did Thomas Jefferson’s Presidency Define the New Nation?

During his presidency, Thomas Jefferson helped define the new nation during the early 1800’s. Introducing central executive governance and limiting bureaucracy, he managed to and strengthen the country’s economic power. He had a vision to crate a strong and united nation. He tried to break from Great Britain and supported the creation of an independent economy.

He launched the first political party in order to reduce the power of Washington. The Democratic-Republican Party was primarily concerned with limiting the power of the federal government. Jefferson supported the notion of lowering taxes and lessening the national debt. He continued to favor a smaller government throughout his presidency.

Jefferson was also involved in the Louisiana Purchase from France, which greatly expanded the new nation’s territory and power.  Future presidents embraced his idea and promoted the westward expansion as a part of Manifest Destiny.

During Jefferson’s presidency, he decided that the country would not take a side in the Napoleonic wars. This action also defined the new nation’s foreign affairs policy for centuries. This approach towards international politics also demonstrated that the new nation would favor democracy in conflicts, a principle of today’s US international policies.

The overhaul of the legal system was another very important decision Jefferson made during his presidency. Moving away from a system that was based on the English feudal laws, he introduced liberal reforms. He abolished district courts, introducing the Judiciary Act of 1801.
