Essay

Thomas Paine was born in February 9, 1737 and passed away in June 8, 1809. He was an author, radical, pamphleteer, revolutionary, intellectual, inventor, and one the Founding Fathers of United States. He used to live and worked in his mother land where he was born (England) up to the period aged thirty seven, where he immigrated in 1774 to the British America colonies (Silver, E. 1985). The main reason of immigration was because he wanted to partake in the American Revolution. Nevertheless, he made the most powerful principal contributions; broadly-read pamphlet ‘Common Sense (1776),’ this pamphlet aims to advocate colonial America’s independence from the Great Britain Kingdom, and The American Crisis which took place in betwixt 1776 to 1783, a pro-revolutionary leaflet series.

Moreover, Thomas Paine went ahead with his contribution by seriously influencing the French Revolution. He wrote the ‘Rights of Man’ in the year 1791, which gives guidance to enlightenment of ideas. In 1792, although he didn’t know how to speak the French language, he was elected to the French National Convention. Montagnards, mostly Robespierre, considered him as an adversary. However, the Girondists considered him as an ally. Nonetheless, he was been arrested and imprisoned in Paris in December of 1793, and then he was later released in 1794. Besides, he prolonged to be notorious during The Age of Reason in 1793-1794 when his book advocated, deism, disagreeing against institutionalized religion and Christian dogmas, promoting rationale and freethinking. Moreover, he wrote another pamphlet known as ‘Agrarian Justice’ in 1795, where she explains the origins of belongings, and established the idea of a guaranteed minimum income. (William, B 1988)

Thomas Paine continued remaining in France throughout the early Napoleonic era, however condemned Napoleon’s authoritarianism, where he was called ‘the completest charlatan that ever prolonged. In 1802, during President Jefferson’s invitation, Thomas Paine returned to America where he passed in 1809. Not accepted due to his ridicule and criticisms of Christianity. There were only six people who attended his interment.
