Three Leadership Styles, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 410

Essay

There are three leadership styles that the assessment provides, authoritarian, democratic/participative leadership, and delegating leadership. Among the three, my leadership styles lie in democratic/ participative leadership, where the leader makes the final decision, but with input and suggestions from the team members. With this kind of leadership, different opinions are considered, and the best is put into action. It is an approach that nurtures the growth of trust among team members because they feel valued and have an opportunity of sharing out their thoughts. However, it is a slow process of leadership, especially when there is a need for fast decision making.

I agree with the results of the test because I find that it matches my personality. Given a chance of leadership, I will apply the same style because it occurs naturally. On several occasions in the past, I have applied democratic leadership, both in and out of the workplace. An incident is a leader in charge of a team that was supposed to come up with the best AIS to detect fraud at the company I was working at. Although I had my suggestion, taking opinions from the team, I was working with helped us come up with the best AIS. It was quality and has served the company for a long time. I believe that the reason it was quality was that I involved my team members in decision making, and it was a team success. However, it took a little more time to settle for the best AIS than it would have if I made the decision alone.

It is helpful to know one’s leadership style because that way, it is easy to embrace and develop the strengths and deal with the weaknesses that are a consequence to9 the leadership style.

Response

One of my peers has a leadership style similar to mine. In her experience, she led a team of five people, whom she treated well when they met physically. Giving the team members treats makes them, feel appreciated and involved, which is a motivation for them to work better. Besides, she allowed them to pick roles on their own, which is a good move because the freedom of choice makes one choose what they can do best, and therefore the work standards are likely to be high. The result was a happy department, because of her democratic leadership. It is a good style of leadership because given another leadership opportunity, her members would still choose and support her.
