Essay

Anna Wintour: Born in England November 3, 1949, Anna has been the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988. Her interest in fashion journalism began when she was a teenager, probably inspired partly by her father, Charles Wintour, who is the editor of the London Evening Standard. During her career she has also worked for British Vogue, New York and House and Garden. Anna is known for her aloof and demanding personality, but also for her eye for fashion trends and her support for young designers.

Trinny Woodall: Trinny Woodall, born February 8, 1964, has been a leader in the world of fashion journalism, where her main mediums of publication have been TV and newspaper. Cince 1994, she has written a widely popular fashion column for the London Newspaper The Daily Telegraph. She was also the co-host of the BBC series What Not to Wear in 2001 which was later made into a book which sold over 670,000 copies worldwide.

Scott Schuman:Scott is the mind behind the award winning fashion blog, The Sartorialist, which was selected as one of Time Magazines Tip 100 Design Influencers. Scott has been in the fashion industry for over 15 years and has worked for Valentino and Onward Kashiyama. His blog focuses on capturing fashion in the street, especially in New York City where he currently lives. In 2007 he was named one of AskMen.com’s top 49 men of the year. He also appeared as a model in the 2008 Gap Fall campaign. In addition to his blog, he also covers shows for New York’s Fashion Week and for Sak’s Fifth Avenue as well as Conde Nast’s style.com.

Fashion Blogs

Blogs offer a unique opportunity to writers. Since they are not paid to write articles for their personal blog, journalists have the freedom to write what they choose, expressing their personal views, style and tastes. This is a refreshing change from articles that are written mainly as advertisements, something that tends to be necessary when you are a magazine or television show that makes a living off selling ads. Since the owners of magazines, for example, don’t want to offend their advertisers, their coverage may be favorable to a certain designer or style even if personally they don’t like it. Blogs have enabled fashion journalists to express their personal viewpoints and audiences have responded enthusiastically. Here are some of the best fashion blogs I have run across recently.
