“Equity is the last, and only, remaining hope for this experiment we call the United States”
Tim Wise’s written line as noted above calls for a new assumption on the definition of the new American society. It could be realized that the situation in the American society has already changed through the years. The makeup of the population that resides in the territories of America is currently noted for its diversity. People from all over the world entail to consider America as the fulfillment of their dreams. Seeing how the United States stand even amidst the many financial issues that has devastated the whole world, people tend to trust the system of the nation and hope that its organizational operation and administration could actually give them a taste of what they want and realize the meaning of their dreams. Nevertheless, although not all individuals who come to the country actually realize this possibility, many still hope to realize its truth.
This particular assumption of their dreams coming true specifically make the American soil such an inviting place making it easier for the nation to become a host to a huge number of visitors every year. Some of these visitors even decide to finally reside permanently in the country. As a result, more foreigners become specifically considered as permanent residents of the nation. At this point, as Wise points it out, the white Americans become the minority of the nation and the supposed visitors become the major members of the American society.
The case of discrimination then tends to heighten due to this particular situation in the society. Because of this fact, white Americans to remain at the top executive positions in several organizations, while immigrants embrace lower subordinate employment positions. This has become a common scene in the employment operations in the country. Administrators tend to chose immigrants to fill in positions that are most often than not neglected by the white Americans or at some point are being relatively avoided by the said members of the society. Separation and division of opportunities for members of the society then become a common ground of distinction as to how each member of the community chooses to function.
In some way, Wise imposes that the slow yet remarkable taking of position by the immigrants in these worker-defined organizations creates a new definition of the American society. Through the years, this change has become a great distinction on how the operations and form of administration changes in the United States. Considering that there is even a new president not belonging to the White American race, there are instances when the fear of the reestablishment of the American community’s recognition is expected to occur. The term ‘America for the Americans’ has slowly become ‘America for the world’; this connotation on the new realization of the American dream has created a great impact on how unity is expected to occur within the American territories.
Immigrants, who used to be the minorities of the community, has become the main members of the American society. The field of employment is filled with a huge number of immigrants from both the Latino and Asian regions. These particular individuals already begin to form their own nationally identifiable groups within the territories of the United States. While they believe that they still are the minorities of the country, it is much easier for them to come together in unity and pursue their desires and their demands from the administrators of the country. As a result, they become the ones whose voices are easily heard compared to those who are slowly thinning in population, the white Americans.
It is for this particular turn of events that Wise calls for a sense of redefining equity in the essence of expanding the manner by which the American society is recognized. He imposes that somehow, it could be that the campaign for equality in opportunity and provisions by the government be the source of solution for the creation of a more balanced society that could serve the needs and demands of both the local residents and the immigrants in the country. This condition entails to make distinctive assumption on how the resources of the nation is used and the efforts of the government is fully utilized to provide for the people of the nation.
Yes, immigration is one of the prices that America has to pay in exchange of being a highly modernized and urbanized nation. Notably, it is an accepted fact that this particular process of transferring of people from one place to another is a result of globalization that America has to accept fully. In connection to this matter though, the argument of Wise with regards equity is indeed agreeable as it entails to wake up the senses of the local white Americans in becoming more aware of their position in the society thus getting their interest in supporting the campaign towards social equity in the nation.
Most likely, the arguments of Wise impose that the new American society should know that their position in their own country has changed. The white Americans no longer lord over the minorities. Instead, because of being outnumbered by the immigrants, it could be analyzed that the white Americans are slowly becoming the minorities of the society. As a result to this, they, even though are given particular good positions in the fields of employment, are slowly being robbed off from some of the remarkable opportunities of work that could define their role in the community. In this case, it is strongly suggested that the definition of social equity be reestablished and embraced especially by the white Americans. It is assumed by wise that it is only through this that the white Americans would be able to regain control of their own nation as the original residents of the nation.
