Essay

Cognitive–Behavioral Therapeutic , CBT is a model that is applicable is situations of substance abuse with the intentions of modifications of the self-defeating behaviors and thoughts as well as negative behaviors. The model is combinations of several theories that include the cognitive, social learning as well as therapy to assist the client in acknowledging the situation of substance use that require being evaded and learning improved mechanisms of coping with situations and feelings that can contribute to substance use. There are pros and cons associated with the model.

The people affected by disorders associated with substance use can benefit from CBT in terms of coping behaviors. Coping is achieved through transformation of thinking and cognitive restructuring. CBT engrosses a focus on the observable and overt behaviors leading to the identification of appropriate steps in avoidance of situations that can promote the tendency of taking a drug. The model also offers a suitable opportunity for the exploration of potential interactions among the values, beliefs, anticipations, perceptions as well as explanations of a client for the reasons behind events occurrence. The model is therefore naturally educative, time limited, problem focused as well as active.

However, the model does not account for the mechanisms where a client learns to be socially comfortable without the use of the drugs and much counseling is therefore needed to achieve the objectives of the model. Additionally, the model is associated with an underlying assumption that a client distorts personal perception, the future as well as the environment, negatively as well as systematically. Subsequently, a crucial tenent that can be associated with the model is the thinking of a person being a cause of difficulty and the distorted thinking is a probable cause of behavioral problems.
