To Atone for Our Sins and Errors in Vietnam, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 378

Essay

Before his assassination, Martin Luther King’s ideals were different from the way other individuals of the time thought because of how Mr. King opted for peaceful ways to show disapproval of the ways African Americans were being treated. Because of this, he was often seen as a radical individual; even when other people wanted to rebel against the Whites, Mr. King would keep everybody in check, reminding them that if they rebelled, they would be turning into the animals that the Whites thought them to be. Only through peaceful negotiation, Mr. King thought, would dialogue be initiated and a good solution would be found to certain problems. King was able to draw a straight comparison between the civil rights issues taking place in Vietnam as well as the peace movements that were taking place in the United States at the time. Not only that, but he also went to talk about the manner in which the war was a cruel manipulation of the poor because the poorest African Americans were being taken from their land and sent out to fight for their country in a location that was thousands of miles away. The problem with this is that the majority of the African American were only putting their lives at risk in hopes of having a better, more sustainable life in the near future.

In order to be able to effectively illustrate just how bad things were getting in the United States, Mr. King was also able to indicate that now even the Vietnamese did not trust the United States because of how the bombs have put lives in danger and the mines have polluted the majority of waterways. By making comparisons and pointing things like these out, individuals were slowly able to come to realize just how bad things were getting in the United States in a variety of scenarios, not just the injustice that was taking place between the Whites and Negroes. Every year, when Martin Luther King Day is celebrated, Mr. King is celebrated for the ways in which he fought against war, poverty, and racism. These factors are what truly made him a remarkable human being.
