Dear Parents:

A terrible tragedy happened today where a student entered the school with a loaded gun and proceeded to throw the backpack that was holding the gun into the nearby closet. Upon throwing the backpack into the closet the gun went off firing into the closet into an adjacent classroom. We are very fortunate no one was hurt and the student was immediately captured. The child is in police custody and all of the children have been seen by a medical doctor and counsellor. We are paying all costs of such medical and counselling associated with this tragedy and further recommends you keep your child home for the rest of the week. We are willing to set up private counselling in addition to counselling at school for any parent that wants to have his/her child involved.

We are making immediate changes to have all children and their possessions scanned by a security guard upon entrance to the school and will be further updating our Safety Policy Manual to reflect such changes immediately for the protection of our students. We are working with independent advisors on this issue.

We have always believed in freedom of association and choice until now. We will have to heighten our security for the protection of our students and our employees as a result of this near tragedy. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call us or come in for a visit. Again please do keep your children home for the rest of the week for they may be experiencing some traumatic shock due to the situation today. With regards,
