Essay

I have concerns about my principal, but I am worried that I cannot come forward directly because I am afraid that I will be fired. Therefore, I have decided to remain anonymous. I have several complaints about the administration staff, including:

Mrs. Jones does not exemplify positive leadership qualities. She will fire staff members at the drop of a hat.  Furthermore, she is not approachable which makes it difficult to develop teaching skills or solve problems on the behalf of the students. At end of the summer program last year, there were a total of 25 staff members that left the Center and most of these individuals left due to issues faced with the principal. On top of this, many employees were fired or force to resign. Since this happened last year, Mrs. Jones is now bribing staff members with money and providing them with a contract to keep the remaining employees on site for one more  year.  Furthermore, instead of firing staff, she is placing employees on a substitution list. It seems that the school lawyers provided her this instruction. She has experienced many law suits in the past, and wants to avoid legal difficulties by requiring staff to sign documents stating that they will not file litigation against her. Mrs. Jones does not believe in second chances.

Furthermore, the lack of safety protocol in place is concerning. Mrs. Jones has been principal for 3 years and still does not have a school lock down procedure in place. It is possible that she has created one, but it has not been practiced or communicated to the staff since Mrs. Bunche left.  Mrs. Jones needs to constantly remind the staff that she is in charge and is able to run the school as she wants. For example, she has promoted staff members and then removed them from the position after they served their new roles for 6 months or longer. There are many examples of this in the records. Not only has this been done with staff members, she has used similar methods to promote students only to bring them back to lower grades. While Mrs. Jones has increased the quality of the school to some extent, by adding smart boards, computers, laptops, iPads, etc., the technology is not being used by the staff because they are not provided with instructions to use these additions, which is especially problematic with the e-mail addresses that have been set up. This is detrimental because even though it seems that the school’s quality is improving through these means, it is not. As a whole, the staff thinks that it is important for them to remain informed, and meetings that discuss events and important happening are sparse at most. No effort is put in to inform the teachers of changes that are essential to their jobs, even messages that could be sent through text message or by posting notes on the bulletin board. Furthermore, she does not follow through with a majority of the projects she implements, such as online record keeping. Since these systems are not updated, they have become detrimental to the organization of the administration. As a consequence, teachers are not able to gain accurate records of student attendance, which is harmful for our understanding of student presence and progress.
