To What Extent Is the Freudian Theory of Penis Envy True? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 348

Essay

Sibling competition is a common occurrence among majority of the animal species including birds and it is a potential cause of siblicide. It plays a crucial role in shaping the strategies applicable to facilitate competition as well as dominance wit birth order playing a crucial role in the outcomes of the contest (Frank, 2015). Birth order is a significant determinant for the physical size, status as well as age of the offspring and this makes a vital contribution to personality. Birth order also determines the niches and roles that an offspring has in the family system. For example, it is common for the first-borns to be conscientious as compared to the late-born thus assuming the role of the surrogate parents in the family system (Frank, 2015). Birth order differences also determine behavioral differences that determine the level of competition for the parental investments.

Penis envy

A female wish for possession of a penis is a cause of anxiety attributed to gender as well as sexuality identity. This is the implication of the pennies envy that Freud associated with psychosexual development in females and it is a cause of psychic conflict resulting to a psychological disorder if an intervention is not executed. Alan documents the findings of Sigmund Freud concerning the envy that women have on a penis and the consequence on their psychosocial development. The first sexual impulse is commonly directed to the mother. Since a girl child expresses the desires for a penis, she is commonly attracted to her father more than the mother (Alan, 2015). The girl child usually blames the mother due to lack of penis which hurts her own self esteem. The girl will therefore seek the attention of the father for love. According to my observations and thoughts, in most family set ups, girls are attracted to their fathers more than their mothers.
