The year 1920 has become a marking strand in history especially for regions facing the different changes brought about by the transformations happening in the society during the time. This particular fact has been presented in stories written by Paul Bowles and Pa Chin who are both known for noting the existence of family values to be among the most consistent elements that define the different levels of human generations from different regions of the world. In their written stories, Pa Chin tried to define the Chinese society in 1920 while Bowles tried to create a notable description of the Moroccan society through the eyes of his characters.
In the story of Pa Chin entitled “Family”, he mentions how three brothers from different generations tried to create a remarkable identification as to how they relate to the need of following the path that their parents have set for them. The Chinese community is of course noted for its strong hold towards tradition which includes intact family ties. In this regard, Pa Chin shows how the eldest son tried to live by the expectations of his parents while strongly neglecting his own desires and his own dreams. Notably, this creates a sense of tension between individual and familial responsibilities. To set a sense of comparison, Pa Chin characterized the two younger brothers to be specifically different from the oldest one as they hope to manage their way through their own decisions even though their parents or their family may not approve of such actions life-conclusions.
On the other hand, Bowle’s presentation of the Moroccan community is more based on how the contrast of family, religion and politics are intertwined between each other. From this view point, it could be analyzed how the constant distinction of the said elements in line with the course by which the human individuals tried to live their lives specifically create a form of definition as to how the community progressed from then towards the current culture that is recognized in both societies today. True, while China remains strongly traditional up to these years, it could not be denied that like the description of Bowles regarding the Moroccan way of living, the Chinese society is also letting elements such as politics to manifest changes on their familial traditions.
The reason behind such affective impacts is the fact that humans live in a community, and being a part of such a community, humans are expected to be affected by all the elements that are existing around them. Family, being the basic unit of human connection basically impacts how a human individual grows into maturity and most often than not creates a sense of definition as to how one becomes more endowed to see his self worth in connection with the responsibilities he is willing to take as a sense of honouring that of his membership in the family he belongs to. The same rational explanation remains behind the influence that politics and religion have towards the being of an individual. Relatively though, how these elements of the society would affect a person depends on the person himself. As noted from the stories of Pa Chin and Paul Bowles, there are instances when it is not the culture nor the tradition of their characters that dictate the development of the decisions of each individual, instead, it is their personal vision and perception of particular matters that push them to becoming more endowed in the course of pursing a particular path that they have specifically chosen for themselves.
