Transformation Leadership-Magnet, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 352

Essay

The American Nurses Credentialing Center created the Magnet Recognition Program which recognizes nursing excellence in different facilities. Transformational leadership is vital to an organization to transform the values, beliefs and behaviors (ANCC, 2010). In order to be a magnet facility these qualities are fundamental in obtaining this goal. A transformational leader must be insightful and intuitive to be able to assess the needs of the people and the organization and lead both harmoniously for the greater good of the population served.

I work in a long term care facility which is a part of a larger organization; Genesis Health Systems.  My facility is lacking transformational leadership and still practices a few of the outdated management styles which dictate rather than effectively leading. Organizational attributes that attract the best nurses to facilities support better patient outcomes (Bumgarner and Beard, 2003).  Moving from being a management style into leadership style takes work, dedication and effort. It is unknown if there is uniform desire to transition into a culture of transformational leadership and abandon old habits and customs.

On important movement towards adopting transformational leadership at my facility would be to for senior leadership to enlighten the organization as to why this change is necessary and communicate to each department what their part will be to achieve this change (ANCC, 2010). This will be the foundation for change implementation and movement into transformational leadership. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing report that to become a magnet status facility, transformational leadership is one of the five key components; transformational leadership, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge, innovations and improvements, structural empowerment and attainment of empirical outcomes (AACN, 2009). I am confident that once my facility begins the process to move into transformational leadership that we can begin to work on the other four components and become a magnet facility in due time.
