Words: 378

Essay

Transformational leadership has the implication of the leadership style that engrosses leaders to encourage their subordinates such that they can focus on work objectives prior to addressing their personal interests. Transformational leadership empowers the leaders to bump up the self-esteem and motivation of their subordinates and consequently, luring them towards pursuing their goals collectively (Piccolo & Colquitt, 2006). This paper posits to address the attributes of transformational leadership and analyze the potential benefits from transformational leadership relevant in shaping advanced nursing practice experience.

The most important attributes of transformational leadership are idealized influence, the inspirational motivation, the intellectual stimulation as well as individualized consideration (Halverson, 2009). Idealized influence involves engendering of trust, loyalty, admiration and instigating respect among subordinates by applying the standards of charismatic behavior as well as vision. Inspirational motivation relates to the potentials of leaders to inspire their subordinates aiming at generating new ideas and goals (Halverson, 2009). The responsibility of transformational leaders entail bumping up followers from low ranks through focusing on survival and persuading their innate desires towards achievement of higher ranks that are associated with love, leaving behind a legacy and learning, among others.

Intellectual stimulation in transformation leadership involves giving encouragement to subordinates to embrace change with the ultimate aim of changing the values as well as beliefs that will ultimately benefit in shaping advanced nursing practice experience. In this regard, transformation leaders have a role to play in encouraging the awareness of their subordinates concerning impending problems and design the relevant strategies of solving the problems. Individualized consideration is one of the key feature in transformational leadership (Halverson, 2009). All subordinates must be regarded as a ‘whole’ individual and not merely employees. The talents and ranks of experience and knowledge  of an individual are used to determine the potentials inherent in that individual.

The attributes of transformational leadership have important implication to the future DNP- nursing practice in Obstetrics. Competent performance will depend on idealized influence, the inspirational motivation, the intellectual stimulation as well as individualized consideration inherent in a nurse.
