Transition Into the Professional Nursing Role, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 669

Essay

After graduating from the BSN program, I intend to pursue a career in Illinois. To obtain a RN license in this state, it is necessary for the nurse to submit a certification of professional education with the help of the school that made him or her eligible to take the NCLEX examination. Furthermore, a Verification of Other Professional Licensure/Certification form must be completed if the individual has ever held certification within Illinois additional states for any other form of practice (Illinois Center for Nursing, n.d). This may include medical technology licensure and other related licenses. Last, the state licensure requires that if the applicant’s high school or secondary school diploma is not from the state of Illinois, then these transcripts must be provided and translated into English if they are not written in this language originally.

My top two job choices in this area are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Department (ED). To submit an application for this first position, I will first need to obtain the relevant certification and demonstrate my knowledge of the ICU and ability to work in a fast paced environment in my resume. I will also need to submit an application on their website. For Emergency Department position, I will need to obtain a license to practice in the state of Illinois and to submit my resume through the Indeed platform. Since no experience is necessary, it is plausible that I will find a suitable job through this company.

To maintain a holistic balance in my personal life during the first year and at five years, I will continue to make a schedule to help me better organize my time outside of work. Using my phone as a planner will also allow this to be more achievable so I am aware of how I can budget my personal time and dedicate myself to activities outside the scope of the nursing practice. The plan will be similar for the first year and at five years, although it is expected that this plan will become more refined at the five-year mark. Known stressors in the first year of practice will be attempting to remain energized and coping with the large amount of work that I am given. At the five-year work, my major stressors will be determining how to effectively budget time to improve my knowledge in the field, which could include pursuing a master’s degree or PhD in nursing (Meadors et al., 2008). My five year stressors are aligned with my plan for lifelong learning. A year or two after I begin my professional nursing practice, I want to start a master’s program with the eventual goal of becoming a PhD so I can become more significantly involved in nursing research. I plan to enroll in a hybrid program for both to ensure that I will have time to practice as a nurse while engaging in coursework asynchronously online to make sure that I can fit this into my schedule.

As an individual that is highly interested in research, I intend for my personal contributions to the field of nursing to reflect this interest. I plan to assess the utility of electronic health records in the health care setting and determine how health care professionals can use them to more effectively improve patient care (Goodman et al., 2010). I am interested in the relationship between technology and health care, and wish to find ways to refine current use of this equipment to become more beneficial to practice.
